The Doctor stared curiously at the statue. There was something strangely familiar about that voice. ‘Melkur! So you are the cause of all this!’

‘Turn off your primitive instrument, Doctor!’ commanded the voice.

Tremas was gazing up at the statue in horrified astonishment, and suddenly twin light beams sprang from its eyes.

‘Look out,’ yelled the Doctor. ‘Don’t look in its eyes!’

Tremas flung his arm across his eyes and staggered back.

His foot turned on a loose stone and he crashed to the ground.

‘Doctor, look!’ called Adric.

The Doctor turned and saw the familiar blue shape of the TARDIS materialising before him. ‘It worked!’ he yelled. He grabbed the fallen Tremas and began dragging him towards the TARDIS.

Kassia came running through the Grove, armed Fosters at her heels. She sprang in front of the TARDIS, barring their escape.

Tremas struggled painfully to his feet. ‘Help us, Kassia!’

Kassia stared fixedly at him, her words echoing his own.

‘Help me, Tremas. Help me!’

She reached out her hands to him, but the silver collar glowed and tightened, and she clutched at her throat.

Tremas took her by the shoulders, gazing agonisedly into her face.

For a moment the personality of the Kassia he knew and loved seemed to re-assert itself.

‘Don’t look,’ she gasped. ‘Don’t look into my eyes!’ With a convulsive effort she jerked her head aside so that the twin beams from her eyes merely brushed Tremas’s face. He staggered back, falling to the ground once more.
